Dear Summit Entertainment (and now effectively, Lionsgate Films),
A long.. LONG time ago, you acquired the movie rights to a little known book called ‘If I Stay’ by Gayle Forman. The book slowly, but surely, gained popularity and more people became fascinated with the idea of seeing it brought to the silver screen.
There were even some rumors that pre-production was moving foward with a casting of Dakota Fanning as Mia. *shudders*
And then.. NOTHING. Nada. Zilch. It’s like the notion dropped off the face of the earth.
I get it. Focus was shifted towards ‘The Twilight Saga’, amongst other films but seriously, what happened? Was there not enough of a fan base? The thought of Dakota playing Mia too much? WHAT WAS IT?
Take the time and go read some of the reviews of ‘If I Stay’ and it’s sequel, ‘Where She Went’ on Goodreads. The top reviews are 4 to 5 stars. Hell, I’ll even share my own review of ‘Where She Went’ with you here.
I feel you are doing the world a disservice by not bringing these characters to the screen, especially that of Adam, Mia’s boyfriend in the books. Words can not express how much I cried at just this one line:
“Please Mia,” he implores. “Don’t make me write a song.”
While we’re being honest here, I cried so hard in BOTH books. While ‘If I Stay’ brought out the sobs through it’s many beautiful words and imagery, ‘Where She Went’ rounded up the books perfectly while staying true to it’s realistic world and characters.
Is this the end, Summit Entertainment/Lionsgate? Will we ever see the green light to go forward with ‘If I Stay’ since you seem to now be the ‘YA Studio’?
Warm Regards,
A girl whose tear ducts will never be the same and lover of Marionberry pie.
